As their provisions dwindled, Hajar desperately searched for water for her thirsty child, running seven times between the two hills of Safa and Marwah, a ritual now commemorated by pilgrims during the Sa'i. In her moment of despair, a miraculous spring of water gushed forth from the ground, either where the infant Isma'il scraped his feet or where the Angel Gabriel (Jibra'il) struck the earth. The Saudi government manages the well rigorously, prohibiting commercial export of the water, though it is distributed to pilgrims in special 10-liter containers.
