Inspired by his experiences in Rome, he sought to convert Salzburg from a medieval town into a grand Baroque residential city, often referred to as the 'Rome of the North.'

To create the expansive Residenzplatz, Raitenau ordered the demolition of 55 medieval burgher houses and a former monastery cemetery, which previously lay to the north of the Salzburg Cathedral.
