Perched dramatically between the sky and the sea at the entrance to Marseille's historic Old Port, the Panoramic Walkways are an integral and captivating feature of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM). These elevated pathways offer visitors a unique architectural and sensory journey, seamlessly connecting the contemporary J4 building with the ancient Fort Saint-Jean and extending further towards the old Panier district. The MuCEM, which opened its doors in June 2013 when Marseille was designated the European Capital of Culture, quickly became an emblem of the city's renewal. Architect Rudy Ricciotti, in collaboration with Roland Carta, conceived the J4 building as a striking modern counterpoint to the venerable Fort Saint-Jean. Ricciotti's vision was to create a 'vertical Casbah', enveloping the main exhibition hall in a delicate, lace-like concrete mesh. The walkways are a crucial part of this architectural dialogue, forging a tangible link between the 12th-century fort and the 21st-century museum. This connection symbolises the museum's mission to bridge cultures, eras, and civilisations across the Mediterranean.

What Makes It Special

The Panoramic Walkways are a feat of modern engineering and design. The main footbridge, stretching approximately 115 to 135 metres, suspends visitors nineteen metres above the water, linking the J4 building's roof terrace to Fort Saint-Jean. A second, shorter footbridge, about 70 metres long, further connects Fort Saint-Jean to the historic Panier district. These slender pathways are constructed from Ultra-High Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC), a material known for its strength and flexibility, allowing for their impressively delicate appearance. The J4's intricate concrete facade, resembling 'concrete lace' or a 'mantilla veil', extends architecturally to these walkways, creating an ethereal play of light and shadow. This design choice gives the impression of the structure shimmering and rippling, much like the sea itself.

Architect Rudy Ricciotti reportedly drew inspiration from several evocative sources, aiming for the MuCEM to embody a 'vertical Casbah'.
