However, built rapidly and with materials that proved less than durable, the monument began to deteriorate in the 1990s. Its marble panels fell away, and it eventually became a bare, skeletal structure. Following public debate, this significant, albeit controversial, socialist-era monument was controversially demolished in 2017, with a small stone lion now marking its former site.

Beyond this grand, now-departed structure, the park retains other important historical markers, such as the Soldiers' Memorial, which honors the First and Sixth Sofia Regiments, reminding visitors of past sacrifices.
