The genesis of Marina Bay Sands traces back to Singapore's strategic decision in the mid-2000s to develop integrated resorts as a means to boost tourism and economic growth. Amid public discussions, the government, through the Singapore Tourism Board, invited proposals for such resorts. Las Vegas Sands Corp. was eventually awarded the project.

Designed by the renowned Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie, Marina Bay Sands was conceived to avoid the typical high-rise appearance, instead featuring three distinct towers connected by the SkyPark. Construction began in 2006, facing delays due to economic recession and material shortages, leading to several 'soft openings' throughout 2010 and 2011, with the grand opening in February 2011. The project cost over US$5.7 billion, making it one of the world's most expensive standalone casino properties at its opening.
