The Shevchenkivskyi Hai Open-Air Museum, officially known as the Klymentiy Sheptytsky Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life, was founded in 1971 with the aim of preserving, researching, and popularizing the culture, folk architecture, and ancient way of life of all of Western Ukraine. The idea for such an open-air museum, similar to the Scandinavian 'skansen' model, was first conceived in the late 1920s by the prominent Ukrainian scholar Ilarion Svientitskyi. A pivotal moment in its creation was the relocation of the wooden Church of St. Nicholas from the Carpathian village of Kryvka in 1930, saved from demolition by art historian Mykhailo Drahun and Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi. This became the first architectural monument of the future museum.
