A fun fact: It’s the only mosque in Istanbul with six minarets, which at the time matched the number at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. To avoid conflict, Sultan Ahmed ordered a seventh minaret to be added to Mecca’s mosque.

Today, the Blue Mosque is an active place of worship and welcomes millions of visitors each year. Entry is free, though modest dress is required, and it closes to tourists during prayer times.
