Nestled where the majestic Bey Mountains meet the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, the Tunektepe Cable Car Viewpoint offers a breathtaking panoramic vista of Antalya, Turkey. This beloved attraction provides a unique perspective of the city, its coastline, and the surrounding natural beauty from atop Tunektepe Hill, which stands at an elevation of approximately 605 to 618 meters (2009 feet) above sea level. The cable car, known locally as Tünektepe Teleferik, transports visitors in a comfortable, approximately 9 to 12-minute journey from the Sarısu area on Konyaaltı Beach to the summit. Once at the top, guests can explore viewing terraces, enjoy refreshments at cafes, and soak in the expansive scenery.
The vision for the Tunektepe Cable Car project first emerged around 2013, with the goal of connecting Tunektepe Hill, a coastal landmark, with the Sarısu neighborhood at the edge of the Konyaaltı district. After years of development, the first section of the cable car officially opened on February 5, 2017, realizing a long-held dream for Antalya. The construction of this significant infrastructure project cost approximately 14 to 15 million Turkish Lira. It quickly became a notable addition to Antalya's attractions, drawing both locals and tourists eager to experience its unique views.
The true allure of the Tunektepe Cable Car Viewpoint lies in its unparalleled 360-degree views. From the summit, visitors are treated to an expansive panorama that includes the vibrant city skyline of Antalya, the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the dramatic contours of the Taurus Mountains, and the sweeping stretch of the Konyaaltı coastline, including Setur Marina and Sarisu Creek. The ride itself is an experience, offering an aerial perspective of the landscape as the cabins ascend. At the top, facilities such as cafes and restaurants offer places to relax and enjoy the scenery. There are also viewing terraces, coin-operated binoculars for detailed observation, and even a children's playground, making it a family-friendly destination.
The Tunektepe Cable Car is sometimes referred to as one of Turkey's more affordable cable car rides, especially when it first opened. Its popularity is evident in the significant number of visitors it attracts, with reports of up to 50,000 passengers per month during peak summer seasons, indicating a strong appeal to both Turkish citizens and international travelers. A delightful local detail is that the restaurants and cafes at the peak are often affiliated with the Municipality of Antalya, which contributes to relatively reasonable pricing. While enjoying the views, visitors might even encounter local photographers offering picturesque photos, sometimes involving a parrot perched on one's shoulder, adding a whimsical touch to the experience. There have also been discussions and plans for future developments at the summit, including a hotel and a revolving restaurant within a distinctive orange sphere, which could further establish it as an iconic landmark for Antalya.
The cable car journey covers a distance of approximately 1,706 meters, taking about 9 to 12 minutes to reach the peak. Each cabin is designed to hold up to 8 people, and the system can transport about 1,200 people per hour. The Tunektepe Cable Car typically operates every day except Mondays, which are reserved for maintenance, with operational hours generally from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. However, it's important for prospective visitors to note that the facility is currently (as of July 2026) temporarily closed, and checking the official status before planning a visit is advised. The best times to visit are often on weekdays to avoid larger crowds, or in the late afternoon to capture stunning sunset views over the Mediterranean. Due to the elevation, the top can be breezy, so a light jacket might be welcome. The base station is conveniently located at Sarısu on Konyaaltı Beach, easily accessible by public transport.
