The Tokyu Department Store, once a prominent Japanese retail anchor within the bustling MBK Center in Bangkok, Thailand, served as a significant shopping destination for 35 years. Opening its doors in 1985, concurrently with MBK Center itself, it became an integral part of the mall's diverse offerings, known for its selection of Japanese and international products. Unfortunately, the department store concluded its operations on January 31, 2021, a decision influenced by heightened retail competition, shifting consumer habits, and the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism and foot traffic. Its departure marked the end of an era for Japanese department store retail in the heart of Bangkok.
Tokyu Department Store made its debut in Thailand in 1985, establishing its first branch within the then newly opened Mah Boon Khrong Center, now known as MBK Center. This launch positioned it as one of Bangkok's pioneering foreign department stores and the fourth Japanese department store to enter the Thai market. Throughout its 35-year tenure, Tokyu played a crucial role in shaping Bangkok's retail landscape, introducing a taste of Japanese quality and service to local and international shoppers. The store occupied a substantial 12,000 square meters across four floors, offering a wide array of merchandise from cosmetics and apparel to sports equipment and stationery. Its closure in early 2021, following years of accumulated losses, reflected broader challenges in the retail sector and the specific impact of reduced tourism during the pandemic.
While no longer operational, the Tokyu Department Store was special for several reasons during its existence. It provided a distinct Japanese shopping experience within MBK Center, offering products often hard to find elsewhere in Bangkok. Its strategic location meant it was easily accessible, even featuring a convenient connection to the BTS Skytrain via a skywalk, enhancing the shopping journey for many. For decades, Tokyu served as a reliable hub for quality goods, bridging Thai and Japanese cultures through commerce. It was also notable for its significant space within MBK Center, being one of the largest anchor tenants and contributing significantly to the mall's reputation as a comprehensive shopping destination.
Beyond its retail function, Tokyu Department Store fostered a sense of community and connection. A fun fact many might not know is its playful connection to the number '109' in Japanese, leading to special promotions and merchandise during its final days. The store also engaged in various social activities, including sponsoring mini-marathons and participating in tsunami relief efforts, demonstrating a commitment beyond purely commercial endeavors. Furthermore, Tokyu was once a pathway to fame for many Thai individuals, hosting the 'MISS TOKYU' pageant, which launched several careers in the entertainment industry. The deep loyalty of its employees was also a hallmark, with approximately 75% of its staff having worked there for over 20 years, highlighting the strong bonds formed within the Tokyu 'family'.
Travelers visiting MBK Center today will find that the former space of the Tokyu Department Store has been reimagined and redeveloped. MBK Center, known for its continuous evolution, swiftly embarked on plans to revitalize the vacated area to meet contemporary demands. Parts of the former Tokyu space have been replaced by new retail concepts, including the popular Japanese discount store Don Don Donki, a large Supersports outlet, and other diverse shops and entertainment zones. While the specific Japanese department store experience is no longer available, MBK Center continues to offer a vibrant and eclectic shopping atmosphere, with its zoned approach providing a wide array of products, from electronics and fashion to souvenirs and local delicacies.
