In the heart of Singapore's acclaimed Gardens by the Bay stands the Supertree Grove, a breathtaking collection of vertical gardens that have become an iconic symbol of the city-state's commitment to nature and innovation. These towering, tree-like structures, ranging from 25 to 50 meters in height, are not merely aesthetic marvels but intricate ecosystems designed to blend architecture with ecology. The concept for the Supertrees emerged in 2006 as part of Singapore's ambitious 'City in a Garden' vision, an initiative by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to enhance the quality of life by integrating more greenery into the urban landscape. Construction of the Supertree Grove began in 2010 and it officially opened to the public in June 2012.

Designed by Grant Associates, with engineering by Atelier One and Atelier Ten, these structures were envisioned to be giant landscape features that fuse nature, culture, and technology. They represent Singapore's dedication to sustainability and its aspiration to be a leading green city, where nature is not outside the city, but built into it.

What Makes It Special

Each Supertree is a sustainable vertical garden, housing over 162,900 plants from more than 200 species, including a diverse array of bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and tropical flowering climbers. These plants thrive on vertical planting panels that cover the Supertrees' steel frames and concrete cores.

Beyond their botanical beauty, the Supertrees are environmental engines. Many are equipped with photovoltaic cells that harvest solar energy to power lighting and contribute to the park's operations, while others collect rainwater for irrigation and fountain displays. They also play a crucial role in the cooling systems of the nearby conservatories by acting as air intake and exhaust towers.

A highlight for many is the OCBC Skyway, a 128-meter-long aerial walkway suspended 22 meters above ground, connecting two of the Supertrees. This elevated stroll offers unparalleled panoramic views of the Gardens, the Marina Bay area, and Singapore's skyline, providing a unique 'floating' sensation.

The Supertree Grove truly comes alive each evening with the 'Garden Rhapsody', a spectacular light and music show that illuminates the Supertrees in synchronized displays. This free nightly performance, typically held twice, transforms the grove into an enchanted forest, with themes and musical selections changing periodically. These 'cyborg trees of circuit and vine' have been likened to something out of a science fiction film, even inspiring locations in popular culture, such as the planet Xandar in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and featuring in films like 'Crazy Rich Asians' and video games. Their dramatic and unique appearance makes them one of the most photographed attractions in Asia.

The tallest Supertree, approximately the height of a 16-storey building, also houses the Supertree Observatory. This observatory offers 360-degree views from its open-air rooftop deck, 50 meters above ground, providing another perspective of the Gardens and Marina Bay.

For visitors, the Supertree Grove offers a versatile experience. During the day, it provides shade and a serene environment for leisurely walks, exploring the diverse flora. Many travelers recommend arriving in the late afternoon to experience the grove in both daylight and its illuminated glory. Weekdays generally see fewer crowds, allowing for a more relaxed visit. While access to the grove is free, separate tickets are required for the OCBC Skyway and Supertree Observatory.
