Brief History: Created in 1832 during the reign of King Rama III, this iconic statue was built to celebrate the Buddha’s passing into Nirvana and his spiritual serenity. Notable Features: This magnificent figure is 46 meters long and 15 meters high, covered entirely in gold leaf. Its eyes and feet are inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The soles of the feet are particularly elaborate, divided into 108 panels depicting auspicious symbols of Buddhism. Fun Fact: Visitors can walk along the back side of the statue and drop coins into 108 bronze bowls, believed to bring luck and help support temple maintenance. Current Use or Visitor Info: The Reclining Buddha is the main highlight of Wat Pho. Visitors are required to remove shoes and dress respectfully. Photography is allowed but be mindful of flash and crowd flow.
