The vision for the Chiang Mai Night Safari was initiated by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who aimed to create a world-class tourist attraction akin to Singapore's successful nocturnal zoo. The project gained approval in 2002, with construction commencing to transform an area at the foot of Doi Suthep, in Mae Hia and Nong Khwai sub-districts, into this innovative wildlife park.

Officially opening its doors on February 6, 2006, the Chiang Mai Night Safari was initially managed by the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration and the Pinganakorn Development Agency. It was conceived not only as a tourist magnet but also with a strong emphasis on wildlife education and conservation, showcasing animal behavior up close, particularly species native to Asia.
