Nestled in the heart of Downtown Dubai, at the foot of the iconic Burj Khalifa and adjacent to The Dubai Mall, lies The Dubai Fountain – a breathtaking spectacle of water, light, and music. This world-renowned attraction is situated on the 30-acre artificial Burj Lake, making it one of the city's most visited and photographed landmarks.
Designed to captivate, the fountain is recognized as the world's largest choreographed fountain system. It stretches an impressive 275 meters (902 feet) in length, equivalent to over two football pitches. During its mesmerizing performances, powerful water jets propel up to 22,000 gallons (83,000 liters) of water into the air at any given moment, reaching heights of up to 152 meters (500 feet) – comparable to a 50-story building. Illuminated by 6,600 lights and 25 colored projectors, the fountain creates a dazzling visual display perfectly synchronized with a diverse range of musical scores.
The vision for The Dubai Fountain began to materialize as a central element of Emaar Properties' ambitious Downtown Dubai development. Envisioned as a world-class public attraction, its aim was to enhance the area's appeal and symbolize Dubai's rapid modernization and cultural ambition.
Conception started in 2005, with Emaar commissioning California-based WET Design, the acclaimed creators behind the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas, to bring this grand project to life. The name 'The Dubai Fountain' was chosen following a public competition in October 2008, drawing over 4,000 entries from more than 100 nationalities. Officially inaugurated on May 8, 2009, it coincided with the grand opening of The Dubai Mall, instantly becoming a cornerstone of the city's identity.
More than just an engineering marvel, The Dubai Fountain serves as a cultural stage, reflecting Dubai's multicultural essence. Its choreographed shows, set to a mix of Arabic classics, international hits, and orchestral pieces, celebrate the city's diverse identity and commitment to creativity and innovation. The fountain also plays a central role in major city celebrations, notably on New Year's Eve, where its shows are synchronized with the Burj Khalifa's world-famous fireworks and laser displays, making Downtown Dubai a global stage.
What truly sets The Dubai Fountain apart is its unparalleled scale and the sophisticated technology that orchestrates its performances. As the world's largest choreographed fountain, it integrates cutting-edge engineering with artistic expression.
The fountain system utilizes advanced components designed by WET, including 'Shooters', 'Oarsmen', and 'water robots', which make the water appear to dance. 'Super Shooters' can project water up to 73 meters (240 feet), while 'Extreme Shooters' launch water to the maximum height of 152 meters (500 feet), creating a powerful 'boom' sound as water is ejected. These Extreme Shooters are used sparingly to allow for pressure build-up. The 6,600 'WET Superlights' and 25 color projectors provide a combined output of 1.5 million lumens, creating a vibrant canvas of light on the water.
Adding to its uniqueness, The Dubai Fountain also incorporates eco-friendly innovations. It utilizes treated wastewater, significantly reducing freshwater usage, and employs advanced pump systems and energy-saving LED lighting for sustainable operation. The complex algorithmic programming ensures precise synchronization between the water movements, lights, and music, resulting in over 1,000 individually choreographed elements.
Before its official naming, a public competition was held, leading to the selection of 'The Dubai Fountain' from numerous entries. Interestingly, the fountain opened in 2009, preceding the grand opening of the Burj Khalifa itself.
The sheer power and luminosity of the fountain are astonishing. The beam of light from the fountain can be seen from over 20 miles away, making it a distant beacon in the Dubai night sky. During New Year's Eve celebrations, the entire Downtown Dubai area, including the fountain, transforms into one of the world's brightest spots, reaching up to 76 million lumens of brightness.
Each performance at The Dubai Fountain is a unique experience, with a carefully curated playlist that spans classical Arabic masterpieces, contemporary global hits, and orchestral scores. The very first show was accompanied by 'Sama Dubai', a catchy song honoring Sheikh Mohammed, which has traditionally opened the first show of the day ever since.
The fountain's design subtly integrates elements inspired by traditional Middle Eastern water features, blending modern technology with cultural heritage. Water in Arabian culture symbolizes life and prosperity, a sentiment echoed in the fountain's grandeur and its ability to gather people for shared emotional experiences.
Experiencing The Dubai Fountain is a highlight for many travelers to Dubai. Watching the shows from the promenade is free and accessible to all visitors. Shows typically occur every 30 minutes in the evenings, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM daily, with afternoon shows also available on specific days.
For a closer and more immersive view, several ticketed options are available. The Dubai Fountain Boardwalk offers a unique perspective, allowing visitors to walk on a 272-meter floating platform that brings them within nine meters of the dancing waters. Another popular choice is the Dubai Fountain Lake Ride, where visitors can sail across Burj Lake in a traditional abra boat, enjoying front-row seats as the fountains perform around them. These experiences are particularly magical during the evening shows, with the illuminated Burj Khalifa as a stunning backdrop.
For an unforgettable visit, arriving 15-20 minutes early for evening shows is recommended, especially on weekends, to secure a good viewing spot. Combining a fountain visit with dining at one of the many nearby restaurants that offer views of the show or exploring The Dubai Mall can create a complete and memorable evening in Downtown Dubai.
