Design Orchard is a prominent three-storey development located on Singapore's iconic Orchard Road. It serves as a dynamic hub dedicated to showcasing and nurturing local creative talent, promoting authentic Singaporean design excellence. This innovative space integrates retail showcases, incubation facilities for emerging designers, and versatile event venues, all under one architecturally striking roof.
The conception of Design Orchard was a multi-agency effort, spearheaded by JTC Corporation, Enterprise Singapore, and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). Their shared vision was to cultivate home-grown brands and elevate the profile of emerging local design talents, establishing Singapore as a design hub in Southeast Asia. Opened in January 2019, the building's design was a result of a competition won by the renowned Singapore-based WOHA Architects. The project aimed to combine all stages of design, from concept to production, and from showcase to retail, deviating from traditional retail models. Initially, the ground floor retail space was operated by Naiise, but from August 2020, the Textile and Fashion Federation (TaFF) took over the management, continuing its mission to support the local design community. The retail showcase is currently known as DORS at Design Orchard.
Design Orchard is distinctive for its integrated approach, fostering a comprehensive ecosystem where young designers can grow their ideas into tangible products and connect with consumers. The ground floor features a multi-label retail space showcasing over 80 to 90 local fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands. Above this, levels two and three house co-working style incubation spaces known as 'The Cocoon Space,' providing a nurturing environment for creative activities and business mentorship. Architecturally, the building itself is a highlight, designed by WOHA with sustainable principles. Its terraced, three-story structure slopes down to the junction of Orchard Road and Cairnhill Road, offering high visibility. A significant feature is its rooftop public space, which is tiered to form an urban amphitheater and a shaded pocket park. This design allows 100% of the site area to be given back to the city as a publicly accessible space. The building's material palette of Béton brut concrete, glass, timber, and plants, along with distinctive geometric patterns and integrated vertical gardens, contribute to its unique aesthetic and functionality, including natural ventilation and sun shading.
One of the most intriguing architectural elements of Design Orchard are the porthole windows that punctuate the raw concrete walls, allowing light, views, and ventilation while maintaining structural integrity. Some even feature reflective mirrors, creating dynamic light interplay and perfect spots for photographs. The rooftop amphitheater is not just a green space but also serves as a vibrant venue for fashion shows, product launches, concerts, and other events, transforming into an elevated stage for street parties during street closures. The selection of brands at Design Orchard, now managed by DORS (Singapore Fashion Council), reflects a deep connection to Singapore's culture and craftsmanship, offering everything from batik dresses to contemporary homeware. Visitors can often find designer biographies displayed alongside their products, adding a personal touch to the shopping experience. The building was initially conceived with a lifespan of 15 years as part of long-term plans for a greener Orchard Road, highlighting its role as an evolving urban intervention. The inclusion of lush indoor landscaping and rattan panels creates a joyful, tropical charm, immersing visitors in Singapore's vibrant local scene.
For a curious traveler, Design Orchard offers a refreshing departure from the conventional luxury malls along Orchard Road. It provides an immersive journey into Singaporean creativity, where you can discover unique, locally designed products across various categories. The atmosphere is often described as welcoming, with knowledgeable staff ready to share insights about the brands and their creators. Beyond shopping, the rooftop public space is an ideal spot to relax, enjoy a coffee from the café, and take in panoramic views of the bustling Orchard Road below, surrounded by lush gardens. It's a place where you can feel a direct connection to the local design heritage and witness contemporary innovations, making it a meaningful stop for those seeking authentic Singaporean experiences and unique souvenirs.
