Scherr leased land and opened Parrot Jungle to about 100 visitors who paid 25 cents to hear him talk about his birds, trees, and flowers. Located originally in Pinecrest, Florida, Parrot Jungle quickly became one of Miami's oldest tourist attractions, known for its exotic bird collection, including the famous pink flamingos and Pinky, a high-wire bicycle-riding cockatoo. Over the years, the park evolved, attracting famous visitors like Sir Winston Churchill. In 2003, the attraction moved to its current waterfront location on Watson Island, between downtown Miami and South Beach, and was subsequently renamed Parrot Jungle Island before finally becoming Jungle Island in 2007, reflecting its expanded scope beyond just parrots.
